Anglicans called on to tithe

A United States-based Barbadian priest is advocating the paying of tithes by his fellow Anglicans.

Reverend Dr Llewellyn Armstrong said he believed Anglicans should give ten per cent of their gross earnings to the church as a demonstration of Christian stewardship, while he suggested additional offerings should be given to improve the lot of the poor and needy.

He noted since disestablishment of the church by government in 1969, Anglicans “had to try hard to find means and ways of providing that church support” with activities such as bazaars, dinner dances, luncheons and raffles here and there, if not the only source, being one of the main sources of church support. Tithing, he stressed, would help with funding the work of the church.

Armstrong, rector of The Resurrection Anglican Community in New York, has put his views in a just-published book, Let The Church Say ‘Amen’ To Tithes & Offerings.
