Chief Justice of Barbados Sir Marston Gibson has reprimanded Government over its slow pace in making important amendments to the Theft Act.
While giving brief remarks at the start of the two-day fraud and asset forfeiture/confiscation workshop held at the Baobab Tower in Warrens, St Michael, yesterday morning, Sir Marston stressed that the delay was one of the difficulties the judiciary faced in prosecuting fraud cases.
He said they have continually asked for and been promised new asset forfeiture legislation but “unfortunately, the legislation had not kept pace with our desires”.
In attendance at the workshop were court prosecutors, officials of the Barbados Customs Department and members of the Royal Barbados Police Force. Sir Marston encouraged them not to sit and wait on the legislation but rather to train personnel to understand the complexities of this crime when it occurred. (SDB Media)
