A collection of poetry, two memoirs and a novel stood out among the 71 entries received for the 2014 Frank Collymore Literary Endowment Award.
And while chairman of the committee, Antonio “Boo” Rudder, expressed concern regarding the editing of the overall entries, poet Carlyon Blackman’s collection of work, A Difficult Age, was adjudged the “clear winner” of the coveted top award, which bears the name of one of Barbados’ most notable writers.
According to the citation read by master of ceremonies and member of the Frank Collymore Literary Endowment Committee, Ayesha Gibson-Gill, Blackman’s poems “combine depth of feeling with an ironic perspective that is applied equally to love, ageing, pain and loss. Cumulatively, they create a sense of astonishment at how the most ordinary things can embody significance and emotion”.
