Seek backup for NIS

THERE IS A SUGGESTION that other options for unemployment funds be explored, similar to the variety of pension products on offer.

President of the Barbados Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Tracey Shuffler, said Barbadians will be looking for alternatives to the National Insurance Schemes (NIS) given the uncertainty of its funds.

“Reverse mortgages will pick up some speed, annuities in their forms and options are going to become more popular . . . and alternatives to NIS,” she said.

Shuffler refrained from commenting directly on the soundness of the NIS fund, but said that anytime people witnessed any level of uncertainty they will start seeking alternatives. (LK)
