Akela’s track star of the week

YOU JUST CAN’T keep up with the Joneses.

The accolades continue to pile up for Akela Jones as the national long jump record holder was recently named the Big 12 Indoor Track And Field Female Athlete Of The Week for her efforts at the Jayhawk Classic.

Competing for the Kansas State Wildcats, the 19-year-old World Juniors champ took first place in the pentathlon with a score of 4 402 after winning four separate events – the 60-metre hurdles (8.21 metres), high jump (1.82), shot put (12.78m) and long jump (6.38m).

She also placed fourth in the 800 meters after posting a new personal best of two minutes, 34.75 seconds. (JM)
