THERE was a lot of talk prior to the World Cup about peaking.
Team manager Sir Richie Richardson’s relaxed reaction after the West Indies were routed for 122 and overwhelmed by nine wickets in their first warm-up match, was that “we don’t want to peak too early”.
But when is too early and when too late? The danger of the former is elimination by the time the team is at its best, to breeze through the qualifying round might just create staleness at the business end.
Pakistan’s was the classic case of coming good just in the nick of time before going on to win the cup.
