OUTSIDE THE PULPIT: Gun violence out of control

O Lord, how long shall I cry for help and Thou wilt not hear? Or cry to Thee “violence!” and Thou wilt not save? Why dost Thou make me see wrongs and look upon trouble? Destruction and violence are before me, strife and contention arise. – Habakkuk 1: 2-3

I JUST CANNOT UNDERSTAND what and how some of our young people are thinking, regardless of how I try.

It seems as though some of them do not understand crime, especially gun crime, and the seriousness of it. They do not care about life when it comes to gun violence.

It is done in high daylight and in public places. With such behaviour, one can only ask, what is next?

It also seems that the law courts and prison are meaningless to them. What a pity.

There is simply too much gun violence in Barbados and we need a proper and urgent resolution to this problem, which has now become a cancer in our beautiful country. How long will Barbadians stand for this madness? Gun crimes are no minor offences and must be our number one concern. Those who are charged for such crimes just do not seem to care.

One only has to view the CBC Evening News or read the daily newspapers on any given day and one will see young people being led off on remand to Her Majesty’s Prisons Dodds, with thumbs up, waving and saluting to friends and family as though they have won a silver or gold medal at the World Cup. Those are acts of people who just do not care. What is very hurtful is that some of them were out on bail before and yet they went back and commited another crime. What is wrong?

I do believe it is better to err on the side of safety for the overall society and keep those suspects who go before the courts for such offences locked up, rather than granting them bail.

The Acting Commissioner of Police, Tyrone Griffith, and the members of the Royal Barbados Police Force must be congratulated for the fine job they are doing, especially in their progress on recent murders.
