AS I REMINISCE on the 34th running of the Grade I Sandy Lane Barbados Gold Cup over 1 800 metres, I had no doubt that Kenneth and Sarah Ramsey would again walk away with the treasured Gold Cup, which carried a total purse of $214 000.
For winning, the Ramseys collected nearly $135 000 – $120 000 for the first prize cheque along with $14 850 in subscriptions.
Class is class and the American champion owner who has fallen in love with Barbados brought two classy equines in Gentleman’s Kitten and Sayler’s Creek.
While Ramsey’s desire was to win this race with an offspring from his top sire Kitten’s Joy, he was equally elated when Sayler’s Creek responded spectacularly to a peach of a ride from Rico Walcott to seal the matter.
