INTERVIEWING Sir Everton Weekes for the Cricket Legends of Barbados DVD I produced four years ago, I inevitably asked about his sequence of five consecutive Test hundreds that remains a record in any version of the game 66 years after he completed his fifth, against India in Calcutta in 1949.
“Making runs is a habit,” he replied. “Why not enjoy it when you get into that habit, for there’ll come a time, once you play long enough, that you’ll lose that habit.”
There was, of course, somewhat more to it than that, such as concentration, stamina and commitment. Yet they would have counted for little had Sir Everton not got into his routine.
In the current World Cup, Kumar Sangakkara has donned the habit. His 121 against Scotland in Hobart yesterday was his fourth hundred in succession.
