NAPIER – Chris Gayle’s sore back continues to be a bone of contention within the West Indies team leading up to their final preliminary match in the ICC Cricket World Cup.
As the team donned their training gear for the first time in almost four days, Gayle was absent from practice due to soreness in his back, but the leading left-hander is still fighting fitness to play against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) come Sunday in a must win match for the regional side.
A determined West Indies had an intense session at Nelson Park yesterday, a stone’s throw away from McLean Park where they play the UAE on Sunday, but Gayle was at the team hotel where coach Stuart Williams told NATIONSPORT that his back was still giving some problems, hence he was given some more time to rest.
“He is struggling, but we have back-up in Johnson Charles. We would love Chris to play all the games so we have to manage him as best as possible,” pointed out Williams.
