SMART ELECTRIC METERS that can read customer usage and connect and disconnect services remotely may become a reality for the Barbados Light & Power Company (BL&P) if a present study proves successful.

Presently BL&P engineers are investigating how this new technology can be used to help the company reduce costs, while at the same time enable customers to reduce their energy use and save money.

BL&P’s chief operating officer Stephen Worme yesterday confirmed the company was examining the possible use of these meters, but stressed no decisions had been made, or could be made, on the matter until a thorough study was done of the pros and cons of the move.

Worme’s comments came in response to reports that the BL&P would be implementing the new system by yearend and in the process severing nine meter readers on staff, as well as six others contracted to do such work.
