QC knocks civil service

SIR RICHARD CHELTENHAM has poured scorn on the calibre of the Public Service.

The Queen’s Counsel, a former parliamentarian, told a packed hall at the Grand Salle, Tom Adams Financial Centre, Central Bank of Barbados, after the Tom Adams Memorial Lecture on Wednesday night that the civil service was suffering from a decline in the quality of staff it attracted.

Describing it as a big issue, Sir Richard said that public life, a sector which once attracted the brightest and best Barbadians, was now generally made up of people who could not make the cut in other areas, such as the offshore financial sector.

“In fact, I have interviewed a lot of people. . . who came forward to the party and say they are interested in serving. When I asked what was their interest in public life, I was shocked. They mentioned travel, an opportunity to see the world,” he said. (SDB Media)
