Crane takes on nature

FEBRUARY 4 was a special day for Crane Beach. It was voted Best Caribbean Beach in the USA TODAY’s Readers’ Choice Awards.

But Mother Nature seems to have overturned that result by dumping tonnes of slimy brown sargassum seaweed on the St Philip beach, known for its golden sand.

This development has caused management of the Crane Resort, which overlooks the beach, to look at putting in a sea boom, a common barrier type of oil spill response equipment, to stop the seaweed from washing ashore.

The entire stretch of beach is covered in almost waist-high seaweed.

But Paul Doyle, owner and managing director of Crane Barbados, said guests were not checking out in frustration as was reported. (LK)
