INDEPENDENT SENATOR Professor Sir Henry Fraser is recommending that Government invests in refurbishment of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and the addition of a new state-of-the-art block.

The former consultant at the hospital contended Barbados did not need a new hospital. Instead he said emphasis should be placed on “money management, morale and supplies” at the hospital.

Sir Henry suggested it would be more cost efficient to find $50 million to spend on these areas of improvement and expansion of the 50-year-old institution than trying to find $1 billion to construct a new hospital.

Speaking in the Senate yesterday during debate on the Appropriation Bill 2015-2016, Sir Henry charged Barbados’ health care was in crisis and called for the whole health care system to be restructured with urgent attention being paid to financing the sector. (GC)
