BARBADOS’ TECHNICAL DIRECTOR Marcos Falopa has defended his young squad after they crashed to a shock 1-0 defeat to unfancied United States Virgin Islands at the National Stadium on Sunday.

Playing at home, Barbados largely dominated the first leg of the 2018 World Cup qualifer, missing a penalty in either half, but Jamie Brown produced a clinical 16th-minute finish to give the visitors an early lead, which they preserved with some grim defending.

Barbados had Jomo Harris sent off in the 54th minute for a second bookable offence but even then created several chances that they failed to convert.

“It was a very difficult match. We believed this team would have done better but we did not succeed. It is the first time in my life I saw a team [miss] two penalties in a game like this so we lost opportunities,” Falopa told a media conference. (CMC)
