OUTSIDE THE PULPIT: Holder bright spark in dismal WI team

But Paul thought best not to take with them one (John Mark) who had withdrawn from them at Pamphylia and had not gone with them for the work. And there arose a sharp contention so they separated from each other.
– Acts 15: 38-39

JUST AS THE WEST INDIES were knocked out of the Cricket World Cup, so too must some players make their exit from the team.

The time is ripe to say goodbye to Dwayne Smith, Denesh Ramdin and Chris Gayle because they have all failed. Forget Gayle’s double century, because it was made against a Barbados Cricket League team.

Dwayne Smith was a total failure and after playing 100 One-day Internationals he does not have not even one century in that form of the game. There is a big question mark behind his name.

I do hope that the selectors will consider playing wicketkeeper/batsmen Shane Dowrich or Chadwick Walton for the home series against England.

There were a number of issues of performance, with the West Indies losing heavily to Ireland, South Africa and India in the group stage, before another comprehensive defeat to New Zealand in the quarter-final, which ended their campaign.

In my view, the West Indies are no good. Not one of the batsmen could bat right through an innings.

What a pity.

Players like Sulieman Benn and Kemar Roach did not appear to be match fit. Benn is a good player but his fitness was the problem. Roach needs to play more club cricket at home.

This question must be asked: why was Sheldon Cottrell taken to the World Cup? Only to be a net practice bowler?

Inconsistency

Inconsistency among both the batsmen and the bowlers was evident.

The only bright spark was the captain Jason Holder, who, I am sure, came away from the World Cup stronger for the experience. He led by example, even as he tried to find his footing.

What I like about him was he took the new ball and used it himself in pressure situations, in “power plays” and at the death.

Holder has proved that you never know what someone can do until you give them a chance.

I do hope that he is selected for the Test team against England for I was very impressed with his leadership skills.
