‘Selfish lot’

MAVERICK FOOD IMPORTERS are chasing contracts to supply Government agencies but are refusing to buy from local farmers.

CEO of the Barbados Agricultural Society (BAS) James Paul yesterday blasted those he termed “fortune hunters” who were making it hard for farmers to sell their produce.

He told reporters at the BAS’ headquarters on Beckles Road, St Michael, some of those people refused to buy from local farmers and went ahead with importation regardless of the state of the fruit and vegetables market.

“There are people . . . who because, sometimes, of their own contacts and their own devices, may be able to secure a contract [from Government],” Paul said. (TY)
