Light & Power separations on hold

THE BARBADOS Light & Power Company Limited gave Government, the labour movement and the private sector details of its multimillion dollar cost-cutting programme this morning.

Minister of Labour Dr Esther Byer chaired the meeting of the social partners at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre, with Minister of Industry Donville Inniss, Barbados Workers’ Union general secretary Toni Moore, former general secretary Sir Roy Trotman, power company spokesman Peter Williams and several employees in attendance.

Byer told reporters that workers accepting the power company’s voluntary separation package were to have exited the business today but those separations had been put on hold.

“We would have indicated that in the spirit of the protocol, in the spirit of our social dialogue, it doesn’t send the right message that you’re coming to tell us today and the workers are walking out today,” she said. (TY)
