IT IS WITH keen interest that I read in the newspaper recently that Minister Ronald Jones wants designers to Leave Out The Naked Costumes (newspaper headline).
This interested me because each year I marvel at the fact that while our men are properly dressed in costumes, the women wear less and less clothing.
One supporter of designers who designs skimpy costumes for women said that nakedness among our women is socially acceptable. In fact, he pointed out that wearing skimpy costumes is a feminine trait. I ask, is this a fact?
At this point if it is acceptable that showing cleavage is socially acceptable and specifically feminine, our society has a serious challenge on its hands. I go further and say that after all has been said and done, our designers and bandleaders have the same moral responsibility as business people, legal professionals, medics, politicians and calypsonians.
However, I feel that it is not acceptable to continue along the path we are going, especially when it comes to Crop Over.
Leave out these “naked costumes”; they are not acceptable. Barbados deserves better.
Right on, Minister Jones. you are spot on.
