A gentle tongue is a tree of life but perverseness in it breaks the spirit. – Proverbs 15; verse 7
THIS WRITER is one who believes in corporal punishment and I think that the time is ripe for Minister of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation Ronald Jones to stop his public mouthing against it.
I think that the time has come for him to keep his feelings to himself. His mouthings are doing more harm than good to the education system in Barbados.
Most of our teachers do not know what to do when it comes to the discipline of our children in our school. These days some are only working for their pension.
The Minister should make an unannounced visit to some of our schools and he will see first-hand the many problems that our teachers have to deal with every day. Some children are very disrespectful, rude and refuse to be disciplined.
The language that is used on the school campuses is appalling.
May God help our teachers. Their job is becoming very difficult each day. I am exposed to some of this bad behaviour. As one who supervises CXC exams each year, I see it, and know that it is there.
Tell me that if corporal punishment is still administered at a very limited level, and our children are behaving in such a bad manner, what will happen if it is removed? I do hope that it will never be removed.
Believe it or not, some students in first form are telling some of our principals that they cannot flog them and are refusing to be flogged. Where are we going?
One question to the Minister of Education – will you please tell us what you did while you were a teacher at the Christ Church Boys’ School?
How did you handle the children? Remember that persons like this writer were flogged at school and at home and yet we have not turned out to be violent citizens.
