PUT YOUR hand in the sand.
This is the message coming from Fabian Hinds, acting deputy director of the Coastal Zone Management Unit (CZMU), as he advocates manual cleaning and not mechanical – of the Sargussum seaweed that is covering the pristine beaches of the island.
“The downside of [cleaning mechanically] if it is not done properly can result in excessive removal of beach sand along with the Sargassum . . . . It would be mining sand, in a sense, and causing mechanical beach erosion,” Hinds said.
He was addressing a party touring some of the island’s beaches as part of the World Environmental Day activities yesterday. (LK)
