$700 million waste-to-energy deal in works

A deal for the multimillion dollar clean waste-to-energy plant for St Thomas should be closed by August 15 as investors fly in and out of the island this month.

A flurry of financiers connected to the $700 million joint private/public sector garbage-burning plant to be developed by Cahill Energy at Vaucluse have started to arrive.

The latest investor, a Chinese company, is expected in Barbados in the next two weeks, while another American investor left the island on Friday after a series of meetings and tours with Cahill Energy and its partners.

Clare Cowan, Cahill’s chief executive officer who flies out this weekend, confirmed there were at least seven investors involved. She said it was anticipated that the deal would be closed by August 15, and construction of the plant would start in September.
