THOUSANDS of public sector workers are expected to take to the streets on Monday morning to protest Government’s handling of the dispute between the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) and the Barbados Investment and Development Corporation, where a number of workers were sent on early retirement at the age of 60.
The call for the 8:30 a.m. mass protest march was made by NUPW president Akanni McDowall after talks on Wednesday, chaired by Minister of Industry Donville Inniss, failed to result in the workers being rehired or given a payment that would cover the period until they reached age 67, as demanded by the union.
McDowall said the action, at the location still to be announced, came against a number of “battles” that were confronting the union and said that the response of the BIDC and Government would determine the length of the protest action.
