BARBADIANS COULD BEGIN paying more in medical insurance premiums due to a significant rise in claims related to chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs).
Edward Clarke, chief operating officer of Sagicor Life Inc. and general manager of Barbados operations, said the cost of insurance was being driven up by a significant increase in NCDs-related medical claims, including by young people aged 20 years and older.
“On the life insurance side, we’ve noticed about 70 per cent of death claims are related to NCDs. That’s significant . . . . It’s pretty prevalent now and we have to do something about it,” Clarke told the SUNDAY SUN.
In 2013, NCDs accounted for 28 per cent of claims by people between the ages of 30 and 39, while this stood at 40 per cent in the 40 to 59 age group. (Willcom)
