LOCAL HOTEL The Sandpiper is undergoing major renovations as it prepares to welcome guests when the winter tourist season starts later this year.

In a recent update, management of the Holetown, St James property said it would be reopening on November 1 with improved and expanded accommodation.

“In the southern section of the hotel, our new 60-foot lap pool, surrounded by beautiful gardens, is now three quarters complete. Work has started on a sculptural and soothing water feature close by,” said the update from the hotel.

“The beach house has been demolished and rising on the site are three separate one-bedroom suites which will be able to connect to become a three-bedroom house for families and friends. The two ground floor suites will also connect to be let as two-bedroom accommodation. This new accommodation will bring our total to 50 rooms.

“The two ground floor suites will be a new category called beach house suites. They will each consist of a large patio on the edge of the sea, a separate living room, a bedroom, dressing area and bathroom. Unlike our existing one bedroom suites, they will not have kitchens,” it added.

The Sandpiper is one of several hotels undergoing renovations.

Speaking recently, Barbados Hotel & Tourism Association president Sunil Chatrani said: “Hoteliers are keeping the promise of reinvesting in their properties, even without the benefit of the concessions.”

“For the summer months, we have several hotels under renovation, with most either closed or partially closed to facilitate the necessary upgrades or development,” he noted.

In addition to The Sandpiper, Chatrani said other hotels being upgraded included Atlantis Hotel, Bayfield House, Beach View Hotel, Bougainvillea Beach Resorts, The Club Barbados, Cobblers Cove, Coconut Court Beach Hotel, Yellow Bird Hotel, Settlers Beach Hotel, Colony Club, Treasure Beach Hotel and Spa, The Crane Residential Resort, The Sands Barbados, and Sugar Bay.

“This is a clear sign of commitment by the hoteliers….I believe that these hotels will benefit tremendously in the future and I urge all other hoteliers to start doing the same or they will be left behind,” he said. (SC)
