POLICE swarmed the headquarters of the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) late yesterday evening after a package containing a white powdery substance and threats to the leadership of the union was received and opened.
Personnel from the NATION newspaper were at the NUPW’s Dalkeith, St Michael complex, the scene of hectic activity for the past two weeks as a result of an industrial dispute that threatened to explode into a national shutdown, when an employee opened the white envelope that was addressed to the general secretary.
Some of the white substance fell on her clothing, and on closer inspection the envelope was found to contain newspaper pages which reported on last week’s march that was organised by the NUPW, but attended by leaders of all the island’s major trade unions representing both private and public sector workers. A number of Opposition politicians also participated.
