ONE OF THE COUNTRY’S private sugar producers is predicting the industry’s collapse within a year if Barbados Farms Ltd pulls out at month-end.
Principal of Ashbury Plantation in St John, Michael Gill, issued the warning even as he bemoaned the state of the industry in the wake of one of the worst sugar crops on record.
Gill, who spoke of being forced to put 110 acres of sugar cane acreage out of production due to financial reasons, was adamant that reforms were necessary for the future of the sugar industry.
He also insisted that for any changes to work, Barbados Farms would have to continue as a major player. (WILLCOMM)
