STATUTORY BOARDS are not the only entities which can forcibly retire employees at age 60.
Central Government too, says Prime Minister Freundel Stuart, can retire its civil servants when they reach that age. In fact, Government can do so when those civil servants reach 55.
Stuart was seeking to clear the air on the recent impasse between the Barbados Investment and Development Corporation (BIDC) and the National Union of Public Workers. The impasse saw Sanitation Service Authority workers walking off the job for a week and almost resulted in a national shutdown.
Stuart said the same way an employee had the right to resign and to seek better opportunities at another place of employment, so too did the hierarchy of a statutory board, under Section 8 of the Statutory Boards Pensions Act (from 1969, Cap 384), have the right to streamline its operations. (HLE)
