Plans by the Arawak Cement Company to open a new marl quarry a mere 50 metres from some homes and directly upwind of all residences has the Bromefield community in St Lucy up in arms.
From 85-year-old asthmatic Pearl Jackman, who has been living in the current village since 1947, to relative newcomer, construction magnate Sir Charles Williams, who occupies the stately Bromefield Plantation House, remain adamant in their opposition to the siting of the quarry in their midst.
In fact, Jackman said that since the company started clearing the approximately four-acre site of dirt in order to expose the rock beneath on June 9 her health had deteriorated. She explained she had become fearful because she has had breathing challenges, suffered nosebleed and her “eyes have not stopped watering” since the tractors started stirring up the dust.
