BARBADOS MADE A LOSING START to the 2015 Netball World Cup, falling to the powerful New Zealand Silver Ferns 73-28 on the opening day yesterday in Australia.

Remarkably, the Bajan Gems shot well in spite of arriving Down Under on the night before the 13th edition opened after over 15 hours of flying.

It was a tough baptism for the local girls against the tough New Zealanders, who are ranked second in the world.

Starting goal shooter Faye Sealy shot four goals out of five and goal attack Sheniqua Thomas, who at 17 is the youngest player at the tournament, scored four of six.

The Gems had started with Sealy, Thomas, débutante Cherise Seale at wing attack, captain Rhe-Ann Niles at wing defence, vice captain Latonia Blackman at centre, Shanice Rock at goal defence and Shonette Bruce at goal keeper. (KB)
