South Coast a picture of decline

THE SIGHT OF CRUMBLING HOTEL PROPERTIES along the South Coast has left some visitors bewildered.

Some question if a natural disaster forced their abandonment while others who are familiar with this destination fondly remember what the old South Coast looked like, dotted with hotels.

Travelling from Hastings to Maxwell in Christ Church reveals the forlorn Harlequin, the sunset of Sun Haven, now in shambles, and disintegrating Sandy Bay buildings which stand abandoned and derelict among still functioning restaurants and hotels.

“It is like there was a big storm in the last few years and they are trying to rebuild,” said first-time tourist Jason. His wife Paula echoed a similar sentiment, lamenting that she had higher expectations for the coast. It just didn’t live up to her expectations.
