TWO MEN WHO appeared in court this week charged separately with possession of sea eggs during the closed season suffered different fates.

Sixty-one-year-old Clement Anthony Standard of Martins Bay, St John pleaded guilty to the charge on Tuesday and was placed on a year’s bond. He was caught on Monday with 12 live sea eggs (urchins) in his possession.

However, 47-year-old Roger Mayers who was charged in connection with two separate incidents will spend 13 months in prison.

Police say the Four Roads, St Philip resident was spotted in the water at Cove Bay, St Lucy on March 18, 2015 breaking out sea eggs. Police approached him when he came ashore and he ran back into the sea and swam away, leaving his catch behind.

On Monday, law enforcement officials encountered him with a white bucket containing sea egg roes.

Mayers appeared in the Oistins Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday and pleaded guilty to fishing for and possessing sea eggs during the closed season back in March. He pleaded guilty and was fined $5 000 forthwith or nine months in prison. The money was not paid.

He then appeared in the District “C” Magistrates’ Court today and pleaded guilty to a charge of possession in connection with Monday’s incident.

He was sentenced to four months in prison. The two sentences will run consecutively. (PR/NB)
