LOCAL FARMERS want a greater share in the quantities of produce provided to the School Meals Department.

And chief executive officer of the Barbados Agricultural Society James Paul has lambasted those businesses which used their tenders with the entity charged with feeding the nation’s children to import vegetables.

Paul, speaking to the Daily Nation at the BAS’ headquarters at The Grotto, Beckles Road, St Michael, said the umbrella body had submitted tenders this year on behalf of member organisations to supply the department with local fruit and vegetables.

The CEO charged that a St Michael business had been given a tender to supply produce to the department but was opting to source the produce from overseas markets. (HLE)
