THE BARBADOS HOTEL and Tourism Association (BHTA) is calling for regulations on the type of equipment used to clean beaches of the Sargassum seaweed amid reports that the practice is causing erosion.
Association chief executive Sue Springer said wider public education was needed as part of a national plan to tackle the challenge.
“The experts have stated that no track belted or skid equipment should be used on the beaches and that wheeled equipment is preferred. Track equipment will remove the seaweed but will damage the beach. No road graders should be engaged as they can drop the elevation of the beach.
