NO WATCHES OR warnings have been put in effect but the Leeward Islands have been urged to monitor the progress of Hurricane Danny.
The system strengthened a little over night and maximum sustained winds are now near 85 miles per hour (140 kilometres per hour) with higher gusts.
At 5 a.m. Danny was located about 985 miles east-southeast of the Leeward Islands. The eye was near latitude 13.7 degrees north, longtitude 47.4 degrees west.
The hurricane was moving toward the west-northwest at near 10 mph and this general motion was expected to continue during the next day or so. A turn toward the west is forecast by Saturday night.
The National Hurricane Center predicts that some additional strengthening is possible today but Danny should begin to weaken on Saturday.
The center described Danny as “a tiny hurricane” with hurricane force winds extending outward up to ten miles from the centre and tropical storm force winds extending up to 60 miles. (NB)
