Across Barbados while many link guns, violence and the fear of crime now gripping the country with youth, many of those same young people link it all to a lack of opportunities.
And while it has become common for “mature” citizens to suggest youth show no interest in the politics of the land, those same youth were very vocal in their calls for elections now, as they equated lack of opportunities with the current Democratic Labour Party Government.
These were among the points made when teams of Nation reporters went into a number of the island’s most “challenging” urban communities over the past week to garner the views of residents about the recent spike in gun violence and crimes involving the use of firearms.
From New Orleans and Emmerton to Chapman Lane and Bonnetts in Brittons Hill, all communities which lawmen identified as troubled, the young and not so young poured their hearts out. ANOTHER ELECTION!
That’s what some lower income Barbadians are craving for.
From the fluctuating price of gas, to high levels of unemployment, some Barbadians are feeling the pinch and are ready for change.
Closely built wooden homes line one side of Chapman Lane, The City, and nestled neatly in the mix is Buffy’s Bar, a popular liming spot where several men spewed out their concerns about the Government last Wednesday.
Though they concealed their identity for fear of being targeted by the police, they told the SUNDAY SUN during a mid-morning walk through, that their living conditions were better under the previous adminstration.
“[The] Barbados Labour Party (BLP) is let some crumbs drop. This Government does let everything fall pun dem lap,” one of the more mature guys said.
