Unions being ‘pounded’

The strong charge has come from Toni Moore, general secretary of the Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU), and Mary-Anne Redman, president of the Barbados Secondary Teachers’ Union.

They are pointing accusing fingers at employers in both the public and private sectors.

The concerns were raised yesterday during their separate speeches delivered at the BWU’s annual conference at Solidarity House,Harmony Hall,  St Michael, which was attended by union delegates, Government officials and employers.

Moore said “an apparent threat to weaken workers’ bargaining position” was “a kind of intimidation” reflective of what had occurred in the United States and England.

“A move afoot they said to ‘flexibilise’ the labour market is at the sacrifice of workers’ rights and wages being rolled back,” she said.
