DR TENNYSON JOSEPH has painted a picture of Donald Trump portraying him as unsuitable for the office of president of the United States of America.
Sad to say, Dr Joseph has superimposed the picture on to the faces, personalities and character(s) of Caribbean business persons, past and present, who have risen politically to prominent positions in their respective nations.
Equally sad, Dr Joseph gave the example of a prominent St Lucian businessman, said to be unable to speak in the local vernacular, but becoming the leader of a “workers” party. He also made reference to a Barbadian businessman who rightly proposed that the pay of all public servants should be based on performance because his own pay was based on the profitability of his company. What subliminal messages are being sent here?
Caribbean people are still searching for and clutching at every feasible unifying force that can draw us closer together yet at this juncture we have an academic using his wits to differentiate between the “educated managerial class” better able to lead politically and “self-made businessmen” who are ill-equipped for the responsibilities of public office.
Far be it from Dr Joseph to set himself up as a determinant or decision-maker as to the character types and personalities best suited for political office in the US, St Lucia or Barbados.
My final comment on Dr Joseph’s article of Tuesday, September 8, is as follows:
I consider it highly disingenuous to use a pen to paint a “Trump-like” caricature with the same paint and brush and then transfer it to a group I consider the “political business class” of the Caribbean.
Let the Donald Trump types stay where they belong.
