BASSETERRE – Water rationing is continuing in St Kitts between the hours of 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. daily.
In a media release, the Water Services Department said they were working to rectify the problem caused by a leak, but the island was also being affected by low rainfall.
“Water consumers are asked to note that we are still experiencing below average rainfall for this time of the year. The rainfall experienced so far this month, although welcomed, has not significantly improved the situation. Inflows from our surface water sources improved only marginally and are still below average for this time of year. The same situation pertains for our groundwater sources,” it said.
“The situation is made worse by a break in the main transmission pipeline line that delivers water from the Wingfield water source in Old Road. This will result in service interruptions from Old Road to Buckleys. Consumers in other West Basseterre areas may also be affected.”
Service to these areas is expected to return to normal this afternoon, but residents were also advised to conserve water, using it only for essential purposes. (PR)
