THE FUTURE OF United Commercial Autoworks Limited (UCAL) remained in limbo yesterday following reports that the National Insurance Department has given a directive to the Transport Board for all future payments to the mechanical company be sent to it.
As a result, UCAL’s board of management, under the chairmanship of Sir Roy Trotman, has summoned an emergency meeting this evening to discuss the latest development in the ongoing saga involving the Weymouth, Roebuck Street operation that repairs and services Transport Board vehicles under contract.
The news of the withholding of all future payments to UCAL broke yesterday after reports confirmed that a copy of the National Insurance Scheme (NIS) correspondence addressed to the Transport Board had also been sent to the company’s managing director Frederick Gittens.
“We spoke to our md [managing director] about this thing and he confirmed it was true,” board member and worker Richard Newton told the DAILY NATION.
