IT WAS a mad scramble for sea eggs yesterday as hundreds of divers got their first chance in more than five years to pick the sea urchins legally and some Barbadians their first taste in as many years.
The opening up of the season for the month of October found the fishing village at Silver Sands, Christ Church, with divers spread across the expanse of the beach scooping the roes out of their shells.
One diver, Anderson Lord, who was busily cleaning his haul for the morning told the WEEKEND NATION: “The majority of the sea eggs are on the north east side of the island from the St Philip Lighthouse all the way to Cove Bay. There are some on this side, especially on the Silver Sands and Lighthouse reefs, and the rows are fairly good. In other places they have [sea eggs] but they are not ready to be picked yet.
“This part of the sea is great for diving unlike the East Coast which is presently being affected by a northern swell,” he added.
