OUTSIDE THE PULPIT: Don’t overdo sea egg season

Come Thou long expected Jesus, born to set thy people free, From our fears and sins release us let us find our rest in thee. – Hymn 640, Ancient and Modern, verse 1.

CHRISTMAS came early on the night of September 27 for sea egg lovers when the news came through the Government Information Service that the ban on sea eggs will be lifted from October 1 until the end of the month.

Although the season of harvesting will be short, one can give God thanks for small mercies.

I would like to know what happened to those sea eggs while the ban was on. This writer is very thankful, because I have not eaten sea eggs for 11 years and had a crave for the delicacy for the past seven years.

I shall surely make full use of this opportunity. But I hope that those fisherfolk do not use this opportunity to overcharge because a little with content is great gain, because sea eggs have been a popular dish on Barbadian dinner tables.

I am not saying that they should not charge, but be reasonable because I am aware that the labourer is worthy of his hire. But you must not take advantage of the situation. I am also aware of the theory of supply and demand.

We must be reminded of what the Psalmist said: “They that go down to the sea in ships and occupy their business in great waters. These men see the works of the Lord and his wonder in the deep (Psalm 107: 23 and 24). And for that we must respect those divers.

To all those who are involved in the season you must remember that except the Lord build the house, their labour is but lost that build it. (Psalm 27: 6). May the Lord bless and protect you during this season.

To all those divers, you must adhere to the regulations given by Fisheries Division officials such as do not dive during the off season and remove the young sea eggs from the ocean floor because we need another season next year and I hope it will be longer.

May the Lord go with you and protect you.
