THE HEAD OF the Barbados Tourism Product Authority (BTPA) is warning of serious repercussions for the country if crime is allowed to escalate.

Dr Kerry Hall said the country could not afford to lose its competitive advantage as a safe and stable destination, two factors that have been pillars of its tourism success over the past decades.

“If the tourists stop coming we will feel the effects in the worst way possible,” she said during a public forum on crime and its effects on community-based tourism held Tuesday night at the Princess Margaret Secondary School by the St Philip Parish Independence Committee.

Dr Hall pointed out that Barbados scored 5.75 out of 7 in the Safety and Security Index of the World Economic Forum Travel and Tourism Competitive Report, higher than the regional average of 4.65. (Willcomm)
