DEAR CHRISTINE: Afraid to buy a vehicle with partner

Dear Christine,

I HAVE BEEN GOING OUT with my boyfriend for the past three years and we have become very attached. He works with a company outside of Bridgetown and I am employed by a government ministry.

Recently he asked me to join with him in buying a vehicle, and I have been reluctant. This has caused a strain in our relationship.

He says that we have to be trusting of each other and start doing things together. The truth is I fear putting money into purchase of this car and then something goes wrong. He wants me to give him $20 000 towards down payment on a new vehicle. He currently has an old vehicle which someone has offered him $7 500.

To complicate matters, I do not drive and often make my way to work and back home since work for me finishes by 3:15 p.m. the latest. While I want to be a devoted partner, given all the negatives that I have heard, I do not want to be a foolish one either.

Dear Outlook,

You are not wrong in your conclusions. I would suggest that if you get into this or any other arrangement then ensure you have a legally binding letter, some type of contract, where if there is a problem, you can get back your money.

While you want to be trusting and committed you must also be wise to all the folly that goes on in this world. Let common sense prevail.

– Christine
