ABOUT TWO TONNES of narcotics went up in smoke yesterday in a controlled police operation.
The police officers keep a tight watch on illegal drugs sent for destruction in order to prevent tampering and discourage interference.
Police public relations officer, acting assistant superintendent David Welch, said the process was transparent as, in addition to a senior member of the force ranked assistant superintendent and upwards and a representative of the acting chief magistrate witnessing the burning, there were also members of the Forensic Sciences Centre who checked the packages to ensure they contained what they were supposed to.
“We are checking the vegetable matter and the powder to ascertain whether they are indeed marijuana and cocaine or not. We check the reported quantities to make sure everything is transparent,” said a member of the forensic team, who did not wish to be identified.
