Home drums should always beat first. Before we go trying to take the mote out of someone’s eye, we should remove it from our own.
The call for Trinidadians to boycott cricket should be mirrored by a call for Barbadians to boycott all regional matches in which the Barbados team is involved.
The passivity of Barbadians has been sorely tested by the refusal of the Barbados Cricket Association to invite Derick Bishop to trials.
Derick has been the leading bowler in the current domestic competition. He has mesmerised batsmen Saturday after Saturday. He has been rewarded with a number of five-wicket hauls and has capped off his near-Superman performance with ten wickets for 24 in one innings; preceded by nine for 59, also in one innings.
Explanation
Cricket fans across the length and breadth of Barbados are shocked by Derick’s non-selection to trials. The BCA, therefore, owes them an explanation for this unprecedented situation.
From time immemorial, performance in the domestic competition has led to selection for trials and performance at trials has led to selection to the national team. Mr Bishop, therefore, based on precedence and performance, has a genuine expectation of selection to trials.
The onus now is on St Catherine Social & Sports Club to take up the plight of their player. Should the BCA fail to give a plausible explanation for Mr Bishop’s non-selection, St Catherine should seek a court injunction against the selection of a national team or institute a lawsuit against the BCA for discrimination against Mr Bishop.
