THE CHIEF JUSTICE and Director of Public Prosecutions are not in favour of a jury deciding punishment for murder convicts.
The topic came up on Wednesday during a High Court sitting on the resentencing of death row inmates Lennox Boyce and Tyrone Cadogan.
Boyce, Cadogan and 11 other inmates convicted of murder had the mandatory death penalty imposed on them.
Those who have exhausted their appeals will be brought back to court to have their sentences commuted which could lead to some of them being released after a long spell in prison. The resentencing is in keeping with Barbados’ acceptance of the jurisdiction of the Inter-American Court, which has ordered the resentencing after petitions from the prisoners.
