FLO BISSETTE-GODDARD thought it would never happen to her, that she would not be another statistic.
But her failure to act, to heed warning signs and the advice of her doctor has left her in that very position.
Bissette-Goddard was diagnosed with gestational diabetes during her first pregnancy. After delivering her daughter she did not follow up with her doctor.
The condition reared its head once again when she got pregnant with twin daughters. Six months after they were born, in 1991, she was diagnosed with full blown diabetes.
Prior to discovering she had the condition at the age of 29, Bissette-Goddard recalled experiencing tremendous weight loss, and extreme exhaustion.
However, despite being predisposed to diabetes – a condition her mum suffered with – she feared it was cancer. (WILLCOMM)
