IT WASN’T A DAY for defending champs.

The status quo of primary schools’ road tennis was shaken up on Friday after both reigning team champions Belmont and individual king Ajani Roach of George Lamming were dethroned in the Berger Royale/Cave Shepherd National Championship at Blackman and Gollop.

Ironically, Roach helped George Lamming unseat Belmont by beating Raziel Lopey 21-5 to cap his school’s 3-0 quarter-final victory.

Aaron Weatherhead beat Dario Hinds 21-17 after Teon Cadogan retired hurt while trailing Thierry Toppin 16-4 in the opening match.

But Roach’s good fortune didn’t last, as he lost 21-14 to Wesley Hall’s talented Shakeem Nurse in the ensuing individual quarter-finals. (JM)
