MORE AND MORE Barbadians are showing an interest in their lineage, says an archivist.

Speaking to NATION ONLINE this evening at the department’s Independence exhibition themed Reflecting on Barbados’ Health Care System, acting senior archivist Stacia Adams said especially around the month of August, Barbadians head to the Black Rock, St Michael institution to inquire about their genealogy.

“Our peak period for users of the archives would be around the summer months. The months where you would have the Crop Over Festival, you would find a lot of visitors [with Barbadian roots] from Canada, the United States of America and the United Kingdom coming in to do predominately family research,” she said.

Adams added that visitors also come from overseas to do academic and scholarly work.

This year’s exhibition ranged from Emancipation in 1836 to Independence in 1966.

Archivist and coordinator of the display Karen Proverbs said it was held in conjunction with the Queen Elizabeth’s Hospital 51st anniversary.

The subtopics ranged from child health and welfare to homeopathic remedies. (MR)
